7 Cafes in Canggu for Foodies, Instagrammers, and Digital Nomads

One of the best things about Canggu is the wide variety of amazing cafes to choose from. Whether you’re a foodie, Instagrammer, digital nomad, or all three, Canggu is about to become your little slice of cafe heaven.

While I was backpacking Indonesia for a month, I found myself in Canggu two separate times. Each time, I was like a serial cafe hopper - constantly on the lookout for the best food, the best vibe, and the best work environment. I could only experience so many cafes with my limited time and stomach capacity though, and still have so many to check out the next time I’m in Indonesia.

In this post you’ll find a list of seven cafes I visited and enjoyed. Each cafe has its pros, cons, and overall style which make it unique. Read about all seven of them and let me know which one sounds the best in the comments!

1. Milk and Madu

Ahh Milk and Madu…I discovered this place way too late in my trip, and really regret only being able to eat there once. Both the food and drinks I ordered were out of this world, and the decor was beautiful. Milk and Madu has an open concept too so there’s plenty of fresh air and daily Bali sounds wafting in.

My only complaint with this place was the WiFi stopped working once brunch got fully underway. This is fine if you’re just sitting and eating, but a real pain for a digital nomad like myself. That being said - this place is one of the first I’ll return to when I visit Canggu again.

Go here for:

  • Brunch that’ll blow you away

  • Good lighting and pretty decor (for you Instagrammers out there)

  • Kid-friendly atmosphere - swing set to play on

  • Getting work done in morning - power outlets available

Things to keep in mind:

  • WiFi only works in the early morning before the place gets crowded

  • Medium to loud noise level when full

2. Pomelo Café

Pomelo Cafe probably has the least name recognition of all the cafes on this list. It’s a little out of the main tourist center and isn’t one of the mainstream places to visit. I came here early one morning to work though and had such a productive few hours! There were plenty of power outlets, few people, and a dreamy swimming pool in the middle of the cafe.

However, if you’re limited on time and only have time to try out a few of the places on this list, I’d rank this one towards the bottom.

go here for:

  • The Breakfast Shake

  • A quiet place to work - plenty of power outlets available

  • Swimming pool to dip your feet in

Things to keep in mind:

  • Food isn’t quite as special as some of the other places on this list

3. Sprout

One of my favorites! The only thing that would make me love Sprout more would be if they installed power outlets…seriously a must if you’re trying to get work done on your laptop. Besides that, everything about Sprout makes it the perfect place to spend your morning. The decor is beautiful and timeless, there’s indoor and outdoor seating options, and it never gets too crowded. I can also vouch for their blueberry muffins and chocolate, peanut butter smoothies.

Go here for:

  • Peace and quiet - lesser known spot

  • Indoor/outdoor seating options

  • Yummy baked goods and smoothies

Things to keep in mind:

  • No power outlets so come prepared with a fully charged laptop, power bank, etc.

4. Sunny

If you’re in Canggu on a Thursday night and don’t know what to do - go to Sunny’s! They have live music and the band is AMAZING. They play 50’s and 60’s music and really pull it off well. While I was there, a lot of people were getting up to swing dance and boogie which made it even more fun to watch.

One thing to note though is Sunny’s is not a crazy party scene like Old Man’s by the beach. It has more of a retro bar feel. In the mornings, it’s quiet and serves up yummy breakfast.

go here for:

  • 50’s and 60’s themed decor

  • Live music every Thursday

  • Delicious breakfast

  • Morning work sessions - a few outlets available

Things to keep in mind:

  • Food portion sizes were a little smaller than the rest of the cafes on this list

  • Atmosphere in the evening is more bar-like than cafe

5. Betelnut Café

Betelnut is a little on the smaller side, but convenient location wise. It’s right on one of the main tourist streets, and within walking distance from the beach. It also has a walk-up-counter where you can order food without sitting down. If you are looking to sit down, check out the rooftop seating. It’s cozy, has a few power outlets, and gives you a bird’s eye view of the street traffic.

Go here for:

  • Walk-up-counter service

  • Rooftop vibes

  • Getting work done

  • Plenty of parking space across the street

Things to keep in mind:

  • Seating fills up quickly

  • Only a few power outlets available

  • Can get a little hot and stuffy upstairs in the late afternoon

6. Café Vida

Cafe Vida is such a good place to get work done! There are plenty of power outlets to go around, and lots of little nooks for singles or small groups to sit in. Food wise, the prices are insane until you order your food and finally put the first bite in your mouth…then you’re suddenly justifying however much you spent and asking to see the menu again (it’s rough). I really like Cafe Vida though and would’ve gone there more than once had I not been trying to budget.

Go here for:

  • Getting work done - lots of power outlets and little nooks

  • Fast WiFi

  • A meal called, ‘The Big Breakfast’ (The BEST thing I ate in Canggu)

Things to keep in mind:

  • The prices are steep even for Canggu hipster cafe standards

  • Fills up quickly

7. Crate

Crate is basically a rite of passage for first-time Canggu visitors, and somewhere everyone should get breakfast at least once. My advice - get there early. Crate is one of the earliest opening cafes in Canggu, but also one of the most popular. Get there between 6 and 8 am, grab a seat overlooking the rice fields, and order lots of food.

Food wise, Crate checks all the boxes. Their food is delicious, decently-priced, and is largely portioned! If you’re not sure what to order, I recommend the French Toast (the bread they use is sooo good).
